Mary and Hashib: murdered by building speculation and racism
The newspapers talk about an "accident" and "misfortune". It is all lies. Maria and little Hashib were murdered. They were murdered by building speculation and the system that makes it impossible to find decent houses at reasonable prices in Rome (just like, and sometimes more than in other towns).
Beyond any reconstruction of the facts, the people who are mainly responsible for the deaths of Maria and Hashib are the major building constructors, estate agents, property companies, banks and houseowners. They are the ones who control the property market and, by imposing increasingly higher rents, force dozens of people to live crowded like beasts in one small apartment.
But it is also the responsibility of the discriminatory and racist laws and policies against immigrant workers of successive Italian governments, including Prodi’s government of today.
Italian and Western governments and capitalists (i.e. the governments that bomb, rob and destroy the countries you come from) use racism to blackmail immigrant workers and to try to prevent them from organising themselves and fighting for their sacrosanct rights.
And they also use the same racist propaganda to divide Italian and immigrant workers. They want to set us against each other. They want to trigger a war among the poor so that they can exploit all of us more and more efficiently.
Saturday’s charges by the police against the small demonstration of solidarity with Maria and Hashib were messages of intimidation sent by Prodi’s government. Their aim was to tell immigrants to keep silent, and suffer their humiliation, oppression and super-exploitation without protesting or fighting back; and to tell Italian workers and young people to keep away from immigrants and prepare themselves to bow down and accept a future that does not promise them any good either.
These threats and intimidations must be totally rejected by fighting against them.
It is only by fighting that we can defeat institutional and extra-institutional racism, and prevent further tragedies like the one in Via Buonarroti. We must therefore continue mobilising and organising ourselves in order to constract a nationwide movement that will unite immigrant workers beyond their religious or national "differences", and do everything possible to succeed in the difficult but essential task of establishing organisational and functional ties with Italian workers.
· Immediate permits to stay for all tenants of the flat destroyed by flames in via Buonarroti
· Unconditional permits of stay for everyone
· Full housing, employment, health and other rights for immigrants
· The total abolition of the Bossi-Fini law
· For the unity of italian and immigrant workers
